 Ammonium Chloride Overview

Ammonium chloride is an acidic inorganic compound. It appears as a white, fine crystalline powder that is odorless and highly soluble in water.

Ammonium chloride is manufactured as a by-product from several chemical processes, in particular from Hou's process for the soda production process (used to produce sodium carbonate). It can also be manufactured directly from the reaction between ammonia and hydrogen chloride or hydrochloric acid.

Industrial Use

Its principal use is in nitrogen supply in fertilizers and as an electrolyte in dry cells, and it is also extensively employed as a constituent of galvanizing, tinning, and soldering fluxes to remove oxide coatings from metals and thereby improve the adhesion of the solders. Ammonium Chloride is an important technical salt. It has a diverse range of applications in industry and agriculture:

• Used as a flux in metalwork, in preparation for tin coating, galvanization, or soldering. It cleans the metal surface by reacting with metal oxides.

• Used as a nitrogen source in fertilizers.

• Ingredient in pyrotechnics and fireworks.

• Used in the formulation of household and personal care products, such as shampoos, soaps, and cosmetics.

• Used in the production of dry-cell batteries as an electrolyte.

• Additive for dyeing of textiles and the tanning of leather.
